Project Overview
The City of Tuscaloosa is growing. With an expanding population of over 110,000 citizens, it has become increasingly important to lay the groundwork that will not only accommodate the present but also sustain the anticipated growth of our community. McWright’s Ferry Road stands as a prime example of our commitment to building the foundation for tomorrow. This comprehensive project aims to enhance emergency response capabilities, create safer and reduced commutes and unlock new avenues for future expansion.
Recently initiated with support from the Tuscaloosa County Road Improvement Commission (TCRIC), this extension, linking Rice Mine Road to New Watermelon Road over North River, is a significant step forward for our city. It includes a pedestrian bridge and a shared-use path, fostering future connectivity to the Northern Riverwalk.

Detours will be implemented to alert and re-route traffic as needed while work is being performed.
Are there specific hours when construction will take place?
There are a few time requirements that the contractor must follow for specific items of work but will generally work 7am to 5pm during the week and possibly some Saturdays and Sundays. Occasionally, night-time work may be performed during non-peak travel hours to reduce impact to traffic.

Why is the project necessary?
The project is necessary to reduce commute times, improve quality of life and create faster police, fire and ambulance response times.
What is the timeline for completion?
Construction is expected to be completed in the winter of 2025
Will this project affect my commute into Tuscaloosa? Commute to schools?
As with any roadway construction project, there will be traffic delays. If you travel on McWrights Ferry Road, New Watermelon Rd, Rice Mine Road, or SR-297, you can expect delays.
What provisions are in place for Tuscaloosa emergency services during this time?
Emergency Access must be maintained during construction. Whenever a detour is planned, the contractor informs the City of the closure, and the City notifies 911 of the detour to ensure proper provisions for emergency services.
Will this prevent access or parking to any local businesses?
The contractor is required to maintain access to businesses and residents throughout the duration of the project. If there is work that needs to be performed on your driveway, the city’s representative and the contractor will coordinate this with you.
